“The campaigns have come to the earliest agreement on
presidential debates reached in any general election in
recent history,” campaign officials said in a joint statement.

The three, 90-minute debates are sponsored by the Commission
on Presidential Debates, based in Arlington, Va.  The first
presidential debate will be Sept. 26 at the University of
Mississippi in Oxford on the topics of foreign policy and
national security.  The lone debate between vice presidential
candidates will be Oct. 2 at Washington University in
St. Louis.

The second  presidential debate is scheduled for Oct. 7 at
Belmont university in Nashville. It will be a town hall debate
format.  The final meeting between the two major-party
presidential nominees is Oct. 15 at Hofstra University in
Hempstead, N.Y., focusing on domestic and economic policy.

           Court upholds spitting teacher reprimand
The Italian Supreme Court has upheld a reprimand issued by a
lower court to a teacher who spat in the direction of the
school principal.  The decision upheld a Palermo appeals
court ruling that the teacher, identified as Antonino R.,
acted improperly when he spat three times in the direction
of the female principal during a teacher’s meeting at a
Palermo training institute, ANSA reported Wednesday. The
teacher had argued his spitting was an expression of his
opinion about the “oppressive” behavior of the principal.
He also claimed his spit could not have reached the
principal because his mouth was dry from the heated argument
that led to the incident.  However, the judges said in their
decision that it was was “irrelevant whether or not the spit
reached the head teacher” or whether his dry mouth “would
have made its execution more problematic.”  “The fact
remains that there was spitting, and it was directed at the
principal,” the judges said.  The court said spitting is
not a “legitimate” means of “critical expression.”

           Student bikes 1,450 miles to school
A freshman at the University of Miami said he made the entire
1,450-mile journey to the school from his suburban Chicago
home on his bicycle.  Jamshed Jehangir, 18, said it took him
17 days to make the trek to the Miami campus from Downers
Grove, Ill., sometimes in heavy rain and winds of up to
30 miles per hour, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.
“The best feeling is getting here,” Jehangir said. “The
ride is great but it’s amazing when you look back on it.”
Jehangir said he was slowed down for half a day by the
remnants of Tropical Storm Fay in Florida.  “‘It got pretty
bad today being blown around everywhere,” the studio music
and jazz major said.  He said he had to travel light to make
the lengthy trek by bike so the remainder of his belongings
were sent to the campus by his mother via FedEx.

                Nude pool plans raise concerns
A Town ‘n’ Country, Fla., apartment complex has raised
concerns with its announcement that it will soon have a
clothing-optional pool and spa area.  The Eden, an apartment
complex that is switching to condominiums, said on its Web
site that nudity will be allowed in a “private European/South
Beach style swimming pool and spa area,” the St. Petersburg
(Fla.) Times reported Wednesday.  The complex said only
residents over the ages of 18 will be issued pass cards for
the area and it is having walls put in to seal the
clothing-optional area off away from public view.  However,
residents of nearby communities have expressed concern about
the complex’s plans and its proximity to Alonso High School,
which is about one mile away.  “It would seem to me that the
process has failed in that there has not been greater
notification to the surrounding communities about this
possibility,” former homeowner president Brian Ross said.
Debbie Carter, spokeswoman for the Hillsborough County
Sheriff’s Office, said the complex’s plans do not violate
any laws.  “It looks like they’re taking every necessary
precaution,” she said. “They’re going to have walls and
everything else. Unless they’re committing crimes out there,
I don’t see this as a law enforcement issue.”

           Suit: 9-foot tapeworm came from salmon
A lawsuit against a Chicago restaurant claims a man became
violently ill after eating a salmon salad at the
establishment and later passing a 9-foot tapeworm.  Anthony
Franz claims in his suit against Shaw’s Crab House and its
parent company, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, that
staff at the restaurant negligently served him undercooked
fish in August 2006 that led to him becoming seriously ill
for several days after his meal, the Chicago Sun-Times
reported Tuesday.  The suit says the illness culminated in
Shaw passing a 9-foot tapeworm that his pathologist said
could only have come from “undercooked fish, such as salmon.”
Franz’s suit is seeking $100,000 for his pain, suffering,
lost wages and “lost enjoyment of life.”  However, Carrol
Symank, vice president of food safety for Lettuce Entertain
You Enterprises, said the company has conducted an inquiry
that concluded the restaurant was not to blame for Franz’s
condition. “We have done a thorough investigation and we’re
confident the restaurant is not the source,” he said.

           Farmer found guilty of sabotaging brother
A rural Stoke Wake, England, farmer has been found guilty
of causing $14,000 worth of damage to his brother’s property
during a six-year intimidation campaign.  Jonathon Griffin,
42, was given a 15-month suspended jail sentence by Dorset
County Judge Christopher Makey and ordered to complete 280
hours community service and pay a $3,000 fine after he was
convicted of donning camouflage gear, face paint and
night-vision goggles on several occasions to sneak onto
land owned by his older brother David, 52, and damage
property, The Telegraph reported Tuesday.  The court heard
Griffin slashed the tires of seven tractors and damaged
radiators and fuel pipes during his six year crusade against
his brother.  Prosecutors and authorities said Griffin
began committing the crimes after his father left the
family farm to the elder son.  “There was a longstanding
feud between the two brothers which stemmed from their
late father’s will,” said Dorset Police Constable Peter
Moore, who investigated the case. “David Griffin inherited
a part of the farm and that led to jealousy issues on
Jonathon’s part which culminated in this vendetta of criminal
damage.”

           Man alleged to have at least 3 wives
A man accused of bigamy in Florida now is alleged to have
been at least a trigamist who was trying to find a fourth
wife, the Orlando Sentinel reports.  Three women got in
touch with the newspaper after reading a story Saturday
about the arrest of Leonard Hare to say that he had dated
them.  Janet Quartermous said that she met Hare online the
same month that he married Penny Marie Milman.  “I can’t
help but wonder how many other women like me are going to
come crawling out of the woodwork,” she told the Sentinel.
Tammy Hare, who lives in Colorado, said she learned of her
husband’s alleged new wife when she found photos on the Web
site of the Chapel of Love in Eustis, Fla., the report said.
Stephanie Mahaney, the assistant state’s attorney in charge
of the investigation, said she has discovered that Tammy
was the second wife. Candy Winks of New York told Mahaney
that she tried to divorce her husband but he refused to
sign the papers. Hare, now held without bail in Orange
County, reportedly told Tammy he was in prison to explain
his absence. He is also reported to have claimed to be an
undercover drug agent.

What are your thoughts on the current drinking age of 21?

“Back when I was in High School in NY, the drinking age
was 18… and the binge drinkers were 17, 16, and 15, with
occassional younger kids sneaking into the parties. Lowering
the drinking age is not the answer.”

“When I was 18, it was legal to drink, but I didn’t turn
to binge drinking.  In fact, very few people did.  Binge
drinking is not something taking place because drinking is
not legal - it is taking place because young adults (and
a few older ones) have come to believe that the fun is in
the drinking as well as because it is currently vogue to
take anything to the extreme (extreme sports, extreme
reality shows, etc.)  I seriously doubt that reducing the
drinking age will resolve the issue.  I’d be interested in
seeing the statistics on the ages of those who are victims
of alcohol poisoning - I wouldn’t be surprised to find a
fair number of 21+s in the bunch.  That said, I also don’t
see a major problem with lowering the drinking age.  Is it
right to ask people to die while denying them a drink with
their meal?  Is it fair to allow them to initiate lung
damage with cigarettes while denying them a cocktail?  The
problem isn’t the age of the drinker, but the culture behind
the drinking.  Change that and much of the problem is
resolved.”

irresponsibility occurs at all ages and shoud be equally
punished regardless of age or social standing. If the public
cannot stomach the idea of lowering the drinking age,

Twenty-four years after the National Minimum Drinking Age
Act that tied federal highway funds to the drinking age
of 21 was enacted, the group found the legal drinking age
“is not working” and a “culture of dangerous, clandestine
‘binge-drinking’ — often conducted off-campus — has
developed,” the Amethyst Initiative said in a news release.

The Amethyst Initiative, based in Middlebury, Vt., is made
up of chancellors and presidents of from post-secondary
institutions who signed a statement calling for the issue
to be revisited.

“Adults under 21 are deemed capable of voting, signing
contracts, serving on juries and enlisting in the military,
but are told they are not mature enough to have a beer,”
the statement said. “By choosing to use fake IDs, students
make ethical compromises that erode respect for the law.”

Amethyst Initiative signatories also call on elected
officials to weigh the consequences of tying federal
highway dollars to alcohol policies and invited officials
to consider “new ideas on how best to prepare young adults
to make responsible decisions about alcohol use.”

              Poll: Dems edge out GOP as drinkers
A U.S. survey of Washington bartenders concluded that
Democrats are more likely than Republicans to still be
standing at closing time.  Of the 100 D.C. servers polled
by a trio of spirits companies, 53 percent said Democrats
were more likely to the last ones left compared to 45 percent
who gave the nod to Republican revelers.  The parties were
pretty much evenly split when it came who was more likely
to roll in first to kick off happy hour.  Democrats have
better pickup lines than their conservative colleagues, and
Republicans are far more likely to take drinks straight up
than Democrats, who are more likely to order something pink
and frothy, the poll indicated.  The survey wasn’t strictly
scientific but the Minneapolis Star-Tribune found it worthy
enough to publish Monday with next month’s Republican
National Convention on the horizon.  The bad news for Twin
Cities barkeeps is the District’s conclusions on tipping:
60 percent see Democrats as the best tippers compared to
38 percent who gave the nod to the GOP.

              Teddy cam catches thieving caregiver
A British woman pleaded guilty to theft after a camera
planted in a teddy bear caught her stealing money from a
terminally ill woman she was hired to care for.  Yvonne Allen,
28, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and was sentenced
to six months imprisonment at the Community Justice Center
after the family of Thelma Sampson, 75 — who has been
diagnosed with a terminal case of leukemia — videotaped
Allen stealing $120 from the Walton, England, great-
grandmother in July, the Liverpool Echo reported Monday.
Sampson’s son, Robert, said his sister, Emma, had suggested
the teddy bear camera after the family became suspicious that
the caregiver had been stealing money.  “The first day when
the carer came in we realized £40 ($80) had gone missing,”
Robert Sampson said. “I went out to Tasker’s and bought a
surveillance camera and put it into the eye of a teddy bear
and put it in my mum’s bedroom.”  “The next day the carer
came back and after she left we saw that a further £60
($120) had gone missing,” he said. “When we checked the
video we saw her go into the bedroom and take the money.”

              New Orleans house wrongly torn down
A New Orleans city contractor apparently never got the word
a vacant house had been given a reprieve and demolished it
this weekend, the home’s owner said.  Erica DeJan, a pregnant
mother-of-three, said miscommunication was likely to blame
for the mistake that resulted in her home being reduced to a
pile of rubble, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported.
DeJan said she immediately contacted City Hall officials upon
learning of the scheduled demolition of her home Friday, but
the order to rescind the demolition was never properly
executed.  “It’s just a lack of communication,” DeJan said.
“It’s not being on the same wavelength.”  DeJan acknowledged
the home she and her husband Brian bought had been deemed a
public nuisance because of damage from Hurricane Katrina.
But she told The Times-Picayune they had plans to renovate
the house.  A city official told the newspaper the case
would be investigated fully before any in-depth comments
on the matter could be made.

           Goose catcher meets neighborhood activists
A professional goose trapper has been caught up in opposition
from wildlife lovers in a Florida neighborhood.  Austin
Corley, 18, is legally capturing birds under state law that
requires only the filing of an application with the National
Trappers Association. He has been nabbing ducks and geese
since he was in ninth grade for sale at animal auctions,
where he gets $5 to $20 per bird. Only recently has he run
into real opposition, the St. Petersburg Times reported.
Residents of the Crescent Lake area came out in force to
drive away Corley and his friends from their neighborhood,
where ducks and geese are considered free-range pets. They
said their calls to police got belated responses but they
remain determined.  “I’m terrified this guy is going to
come back,” said Jennifer Silva. “We all just want him to
leave this park alone and find another way to make a living.”
Corley is unapologetic, although he doesn’t expect to return
to Crescent Lake.  “They’re nobody’s ducks,” he says. “It’s
not goose-napping.”

What are your thoughts on Wal-Mart influencing its workers
votes?

“So the unions want to complain that Wal-Mart is trying to
influence its voters?  Have you seen the amount of propaganda
that the unions send out every month to its members.  All of
it is political and all toward the Democrat candidate for
president, governor, senator, representative or the Democrat
“team” that the union wants to promote.  I know that the
union says this is all non partisan and that they are only
looking out for the best interests of their members.  I am
sure that Wal-Mart would say the same thing.  Personally, I
would love to enjoy the “free choice” to belong to the union
or not but in Washington, the union gave a large financial
contribution and sponsored the third recount of the ballots
for the Governor and she then turned the state government
into a closed shop.  We don’t have any “free choice” and
there is no employee free choice in the Employee Free Choice
Act.  The name implies that it would allow the employees to
decide to unionize or not but in reality, it would allow the
unions to form and actually cut the majority of the employees
out of any choice like they have done in Washington.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Wal-Mart has been
trying to convince its employees to vote against the
presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama.
Obama supports the Employee Free Choice Act, which would
allow unions to form without secret-ballot votes, while
Republican John McCain opposes it.

The AFL-CIO and other union and anti-Wal-Mart groups filed
a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, The Hill
reported.

“Wal-Mart has shown exactly why our nation needs the Employee
Free Choice Act,” said AFL-CIO President John Sweeney. “We
must outlaw the kind of behavior for which Wal-Mart is famous
and give workers a free and fair choice on whether to form
a union.”

David Tovar, a company spokesman, said that Wal-Mart has no
been telling its workers how to vote.

            Judge rejects flushing tenant’s appeal
A British judge has rejected a Tremadog, Wales, woman’s
attempt to overturn a decision that demoted her from being
a secure tenant due to “household noises.”  Judge John
Behrens of the High Court in London ruled — despite the
insistence of Mwynwen Jones, 57, that the sounds she made at
her home that generated complaints from neighbors were merely
“household noises” — that they qualified as a nuisance if
they bothered neighbors at late hours, The Daily Telegraph
reported.  “Whilst flushing a toilet may not be a nuisance,
plainly it may be so if it is done repeatedly and at
anti-social hours,” Behrens said.  The Gwynedd County Council
decided last year, after noise complaints from Jones’s
neighbors, to revoke her secure tenant status, a move that
leaves open the possibility of eviction without the need to
give further cause.  Behrens said the 15-day window for Jones
to appeal the council’s decision had already passed.  A
council representative said it plans to evict Jones in the
near future.

          Report: Britons multitask in front of TV
A report by a British research organization suggests Britons
are increasingly using their cell phones and laptop computers
while sitting in front of the TV.  Ofcom’s annual
Communications Market report said that while average Britons
spend about 218 minutes watching TV each day, three quarters
of those between ages 20 and 34 regularly use their cell
phones while watching the tube and more than a third of
people between ages 25 and 44 use their laptop computers to
surf the Internet while tuning in, The Guardian reported.
A majority of the study’s subjects said TV is the “media
activity” they would least like to live without while those
ages 16 to 19 said their cell phones were their most
indispensable media item.  The report suggested Britons ages
16 to 24 spend about 150 minutes per day in front of the TV,
a sharp contrast to the five hours of television watched by
those over 65.

            Samaritan’s car stolen as she helps man
A Manchester, England, doctor said her car was stolen after
she stopped at the side of the road to help an elderly man
who had been struck by a bus.  The 25-year-old doctor, who
asked not to be named, said she stopped to help a 74-year-old
who had been hit by a bus in rush hour traffic and was in
such a hurry that she left her keys in her car, The Daily
Mail reported.  A few minutes after she stopped, a thief
jumped into the unlocked vehicle and drove off.  However,
the doctor said she would not let the incident deter her from
helping others in the future.  “I am very disappointed at
what has happened, but I would do the same again,” she said.
Greater Manchester Police Superintendent Ian Palmer said
he reacted with “horror” when he heard of how the car was
stolen.  “The vehicle was taken in a despicable way,” he
said. “This lady’s actions were heroic. Her stopping to
offer assistance demonstrates the best of qualities of human
nature.”

Attorney General Lisa Madigan said the drink, which does
not actually contain methamphetamine, has been banned from
the state because it violates the Illinois Food, Drug and
Cosmetic Act and the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive
Practices by comparing itself to illegal drugs, WQAD-TV,
Moline, Ill., reported Wednesday.

The San Francisco-based makers of Meth Coffee said their
product was designed strictly for sale online.

“(Meth Coffee) was never marketed or sold in stores in
Illinois, and it is now no longer available online for
purchase from, or shipment to, Illinois. Meth Coffee was
founded by a group of comedians, artists, and rebels,

            $15 Sicilian sandwich draws complaint
A nice salami and cheese sandwich from a small Sicilian
shop may be a thing of beauty, but it shouldn’t cost $15,
a British tourist says.  The unidentified tourist, along
with six other people, say they bought three sandwiches at
an ordinary shop in the Sicilian seaside village of Tusa
Wednesday, but complained to the village’s mayor when they
were charged a total of $64 for three sandwiches and soft
drinks, ANSA, the Italian news agency, reported.  The
group, which included two native Sicilians, said they went
to the mayor when the shopkeeper refused to refund their
money and the argument began to get heated.  “It’s
scandalous to pay ($45) for three sandwiches in a very
normal bar that’s not even in the center of the town,” a
native Italian member of the party told ANSA. “I live in
Turin, where a sandwich costs ($7.50) at the most.”  Tusa
Mayor Angelo Tudisca reportedly apologized to the tourists
and promised to take the bar owner to task over the cost
of his sandwiches.

          Sweden marks birth of first male elephant
An elephant at Sweden’s Boras Zoo has given birth to the
first male elephant to be born in the country.  Bo Kjellson,
head of operations at Boras Zoo, said security camera
footage shows the mother, Dudu, going into labor shortly
before noon Monday — weeks before her calf was due, The
Local reported Wednesday.  “Of course we knew that Dudu
was pregnant but had worked out that her due date was at
the end of August,” Kjellson said. “But it doesn’t matter
that it was a bit earlier than planned, everything went
very well.”  The new baby elephant’s older sister, Kwanza,
was the first elephant born in a Swedish zoo when Dudu
gave birth to her in 2001.  Kjellson told The Local the
mother and calf were resting Wednesday. He said a name for
the baby will be chosen by its caretakers.

                 Boy, 8, out-moos competition
An 8-year-old boy with a talent for imitating the calls of
a cow has won the top mooing prize at the Wisconsin State
Fair in West Allis.  Philip Prantle took home the top prize
Saturday at the fair’s fifth annual Cousins Subs
Moo-la-palooza World Famous Mooing Contest, the Racine
(Wis.) Journal-Times reported Wednesday.  Prantle was
selected to compete in the contest after mooing against
about 500 others in an online competition. At the contest,
however, the race between Prantle and runner-up Tony Capla,
also 8, was so close organizers had to hold a “moo-off”
between them, said Dawn Bores, marketing representative
for Cousins Subs.  The winner’s mother, Cheryl Prantle,
said her son was chosen the victor after the question was
put to the assembled crowd.  The host “would put his hand
over Philip and they would cheer. Then he would move his
hand over Tony and they would cheer. It went back and forth
four or five times. The excitement kept building,” Cheryl
Prantle said. For his victory, Philip Prantle was awarded
$1,000, a year’s supply of Cousins’ subs and a suit jacket
with a cow print that Cousins Subs dubbed the “moo jacket.”

A letter obtained by the Boston Globe indicates Gloucester
High School principal Joseph Sullivan quit his job Tuesday,
accusing the city’s mayor of slandering him and saying he
no longer has the trust of other officials.

Sullivan’s comments to a reporter earlier this year that a
spike in teen pregnancies at Gloucester High was the result
of an intentional effort by girls to have babies put the
Massachusetts fishing city into the spotlight, much of the
attention unwelcome, the Globe said.

Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk disputed Sullivan’s “pact”
comments, saying at a July 23 news conference there was
“absolutely no evidence” of any pact and adding that
Sullivan “was foggy in his memory of how he heard about the
information.”

In his resignation letter, Sullivan reportedly said Kirk
had “publicly slandered my reputation, my integrity, and
my intelligence,” adding, “I recognize that I have neither
the trust, confidence or respect of the mayor nor the
superintendent.”

         3 arrested after glitch gives free fares
NEW YORK, Aug. 12 (UPI) — New York authorities said three
suspects used a software glitch in a MetroCard machine to
take $800,000 in free fares over nearly three years. 
Authorities said married couple Cary Grant, 40, and Lisa
Foster Jordan, 37, along with friend Christopher Clemente, 37,
were charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of
stolen property after a Metropolitan Transportation Authority
audit discovered the three had been using the software glitch
to obtain free fare cards, the New York Post reported
Tuesday.  “The odds of [the suspects] stumbling on this were
astronomical,” MTA spokesman Jeremy Soffin said.  The free
fare glitch “would only happen if you used an active debit
card but had insufficient money in your account and it was
from a smaller, non-local bank,” Soffin said.  “The woman
stumbled on it unwittingly, and they proceeded to very
knowingly steal form the MTA,” he said.  Law enforcement
sources said the three would obtain the free cards and then
sell them to other riders between September 2005 and May
of this year.

           Woman gets house arrest for tiger import
Prosecutors said a Hercules, Calif., woman has been sentenced
to house arrest after she pleaded guilty to illegally
importing a stuffed tiger from Vietnam.  Federal prosecutors
announced Tuesday that Nicki Phung, 31, was sentenced to
six months of home confinement and three years of probation
after pleading guilty to a violation of the Lacey Act, which
bans importation or exportation of wildlife barred from sale
by U.S. law, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.
Phung was also ordered to pay $5,000 to a nonprofit group
aimed at the protection of big cats.  The woman’s boyfriend,
Steven Tieu, 38, received the same punishment when he was
sentenced for the same crime in April. The couple had been
accused of importing the mounted tiger from Ho Chi Minh
City, Vietnam, in December 2007 without the proper permits.

        Police: Big nose foiled suspect’s disguise
New York police said a bank robbery suspect’s cross-dressing
disguise wasn’t enough to hide his distinctive nose from
investigators.  Police said Samuel Manoharan, 31, is
suspected of robbing five banks in New York’s Manhattan
and Brooklyn boroughs while dressed in a wig, makeup and
women’s clothing, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
However, officers said a teller took down his license
plate number after one of the robberies and police who
arrived at his home said they immediately recognized him
from his facial features.  “He has very distinguishable
features — a very big nose. His wig couldn’t cover his
nose,” one police source said.  Prosecutors said Manoharan
was charged with grand larceny and robbery for a June 28
robbery in Manhattan. They said charges are pending for the
other incidents.  The suspect was being held by police in
lieu of $30,000 bail.

Howard Wolfson, Clinton’s former communications director,
says if Edwards’ now-admitted extra-marital affair had
been known earlier this year, the former North Carolina
senator would have been forced out of the race and his
absence from the Iowa Democratic caucuses would have
allowed Clinton, the senator from New York, to defeat Sen.
Barack Obama, D-Ill., ABC News reported Monday.

“I believe we would have won Iowa, and Clinton today would
therefore have been the nominee,” Wolfson told the network.
As it happened, Clinton finished third in the Iowa
caucusing, close behind Edwards, while Obama won, gaining
a momentum that set the pace for the rest of the primaries.

ABC noted Edwards had denied a story in the National
Enquirer about the alleged extramarital affair last October.
He admitted to the affair last week, but that earlier denial
“certainly had an impact on the election,” Wolfson said.

             Triple wedding saves $60,000
A trio of British couples said they saved an estimated
$60,000 by holding a triple wedding for the price of one
marriage.  Melanie Taylor, 42, said she came up with the
idea for the triple wedding after going over the costs of
marrying her boyfriend, Michael Padgett, 34, The Mirror
reported.  “We were with our friends, Emma Wood and Spencer
May, one night and they had been thinking about getting
married too, so I joked about having a double wedding,”
Taylor said. “Then our other friends, Gloria Mooney and
Andrew Tilley, joined us and we laughed about making it a
triple.”  However, she said the joke soon became a
full-fledged plan, and the three couples married at a
ceremony with nearly 300 guests at a hotel in Leicester,
England.  “Getting married together made it even more of
a special day,” Taylor said. “There was no trying to

was to share their wedding with one another, the three
pairs said they opted for separate honeymoons.

          Jets, Giants fans scramble to pay new fees
Fans of New York’s pro football teams, the Jets and the
Giants, say they are going to extremes to pay a new fee to
give them the right to buy season tickets.  Giants fan John
Costantini said he and his family are dipping into retirement
funds and taking out bank loans to afford the family’s
$80,000 “personal seats license” fee, which was adopted by
the two teams to help pay for the $1.6 billion in construction
needed for the new stadium the teams are scheduled to begin
sharing in 2010, the New York Post reported.  The fees come
in addition to the prices of regular season tickets.  PSL
prices for Jets games have not yet been announced, but the
Giants PSLs are selling for between $1,000 and $20,000 per
seat.  Costantini said his family is being required to pay
$20,000 for each of their four midfield seats three rows
behind the Giants bench.

            Man found guilty of sending pig head
A London court has found a man guilty of sending a pig’s
head disguised as a birthday present to his ex-girlfriend’s
sister-in-law.  The Kingston Crown Court jury found Martin
Anderson, 44, guilty of masterminding a hate campaign against
Kim Teague that left the woman fearing violence, The Sun
reported.  Judge Stephen Bellamy set sentencing for Sept. 5.
“Obviously all options as to sentencing will be kept open,”
he told Anderson after the guilty verdict was announced.
Teague had told the court she received a gift-wrapped package
that contained the severed head of a pig with the letters
“RIP” written on its forehead. She said she also received
anonymous phone calls from someone who made pig noises over
the line.

What are your thoughts on Clinton foreging repaying herself?

“That is what should happen!  Good grief!  I can’t even
imagine it being a question that others be paid back before
them.  I think this shows how ridiculous it is for
politicians to spend so much money on campaigns.  Can’t
anyone see there are better ways to spend millions in this
country?”

Clinton, a Democratic U.S. senator from New York, and her
husband, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, will write off
$13 million in personal loans they made to Clinton’s failed
campaign, the Washington political news Web site said citing
unnamed sources.

A mid-September deadline for paying back the loans will be
allowed to pass by the Clintons, at which point the loans
will be reclassified as contributions, the source said.

The Web site said the Clintons’ willingness to forego
repayment before the deadline probably reflects a decision
to avoid a public relations fallout if they had decided to
pay themselves ahead of the $12 million owed to campaign
vendors, many of them small businesses.

Clinton’s campaign has $25 million in debt, analysts said.

        Family stranded as pilot’s license expires
Low-cost air carrier easyJet says it will pay $3,360 to a
British family stranded in the Canary Islands after the
pilot forgot to renew his license.  The couple, Nicola and
Robert Starkie, and their two young daughters were planning
to head home from Las Palmas on Grand Canary after a
wedding, but when they got to the airport, they found their
flight was canceled because the pilot’s license had expired,
The Times of London reported.  The next flight didn’t leave
for five days, and the passengers said the airline couldn’t
guarantee seats on it. Even worse, easyJet would only pay
for two nights’ accommodations in the meantime, the
newspaper said.  The Starkies found seats on a flight to
Bristol, England, with another carrier, at a cost of $768,
the Times said, and only received what they considered to
be proper compensation after they brought their story to a
local newspaper.

        Actor image subs for teen in wanted poster
Police in New Zealand are using the image of a 58-year-old
celebrity in place of that of a suspected teenage burglar
on a wanted poster.  Because of a legal ban on publishing
photographs of young offenders, police decided use a picture
of actor Robbie Coltrane, best known for his role as Rubeus
Hagrid in Harry Potter films. The leaflets being distributed
after a wave of burglaries in Christchurch ask viewers to
“image him aged 16 with lank greasy hair and you have the
picture,” reported The Times of London.  The pamphlet goes
on to say the suspect “is 16 years old, lives locally,
travels by bicycle and burgles houses in your street. He
will break windows to gain entry and ransack the property,
targeting electronic items, cash and jewelry.” Coltrane was
reportedly not aware that his photograph was being used to
fight crime in New Zealand. His agent had no comment for
the newspaper, saying that Coltrane was in the United States.

          Union soldier’s grave correctly honored
The North Carolina grave of a Union soldier has finally been
correctly marked, 125 years after it was mistakenly
identified as belonging to a Confederate.  Pvt. Jacob Pfeiffer
of New York has a new tombstone and was honored Saturday by
about a dozen Civil War buffs and others in Raleigh’s Oakwood
cemetery, reported the Raleigh News & Observer.  Pfeiffer
grew up on a farm in east Manhattan and was 21 when he died
from wounds incurred during the Battle of Gettysburg. He was
believed to be a North Carolina soldier until Civil War
historian Charles Purser of Raleigh uncovered his true
identity.  The stone formerly standing over Pfeiffer’s grave
carried the name of Confederate Pvt. George Piper. The
burial location of Piper’s body is unknown.  Purser has
authored a book about the cemetery’s Confederate section
entitled, “A Story Behind Every Stone.” He credited the
Internet and a New York historian with helping him confirm
Pfeiffer’s true identity.  “It’s such a wealth of
information,” Purser said about the Internet. “Ten years
ago I couldn’t have found him.”

What are your thoughts on the extra-maritial affair
allegations John Edwards is facing?

“Ain’t ya glad you didn’t send him a few thousand $ and then
if he had gotten this far to find out he’s the same lying
piece of crap as the rest of them.”
